Calvert County’s animal shelter is waiving adoption fees for the entire month of August as part of a nationwide push to find homes for shelter animals, according to the Southern Maryland Chronicle.
The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter in Prince Frederick joined the Clear the Shelters campaign, which runs Aug. 1 through Aug. 29 this year. The national initiative has helped place more than 800,000 animals in homes since it began, and set a single-campaign record of over 161,000 adoptions in 2022, the Chronicle reported.
What’s available and what’s included
Dogs, cats, rabbits, roosters and pigs are among the animals up for adoption at the Prince Frederick shelter, according to the report. Even with fees waived, adoptions still include spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, age-appropriate vaccinations and a starter care package, and the shelter’s standard screening process still applies.
Part of a statewide effort
The Calvert shelter’s participation ties into the Maryland 3,000 Adoption Challenge, a statewide push aiming to place more than 3,000 animals during August, the Chronicle reported.
The shelter is named for Linda Kelley, a former Calvert County commissioner and animal rights advocate, and is operated by the Calvert County Department of Public Safety. It opened in November 2018 at 5055 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick.
